Providing CPD for schools, MATs and other organisations is a part of my work that I love. When asked to speak on a particular topic it always forces me to go back to my own practice and reflect on how I strive to do that particular element of teaching geography in the best possible way in my own classroom.

Lots of the recordings of CPD that I’ve delivered can be found on the ‘Curriculum Thoughts’ page of this blog but here I wanted to organise it by theme and topic and add in some material that I’ve used with SCITT trainees in my role as Trust Lead for Geography. Each week I deliver a 90-minute subject session for the geography SCIT T trainees within our Trust and really enjoy resourcing this using the fantastic array of subject-specific CPD resources that are out there.

Adaptive Teaching

  • The freely available Tutor2U course on Adaptive Teaching is excellent. I ask trainees to watch the first 3 videos and answer the questions on this sheet before we discuss in depth. The resources can be found here.

  • To introduce trainee teachers to the fieldwork requirements for GCSE Geography, I use this webinar from the GA. Trainees answer the following questions as they watch.

Disciplinary Literacy

  • In this podcast I spoke about geographical literacy and how to encourage students to ‘speak like a geographer’. I ask trainees to answer the following questions:

    1. What do I say that you agree with?

    2. What do I say that you could challenge / might disagree with?

    3. How have you tried to encourages students to Speak Like A Geographer thus far this year?

    4. What other questions do you have about geographical literacy?
